About STOTT PILATES®

Connecting Body & Breath.

Joseph H. Pilates, born in 1880 in Dusseldorf, Germany, was a sickly child. His entire life was spent trying to make his body stronger. He studied body building and gymnastics. After years of study, he came to the conclusion that our life-styles, bad posture, and inefficient breathing were the causes of poor health. With this in mind, he created a series of exercises and training techniques and engineered all the equipment and specifications required to teach this training properly. In 1912 he moved to England where he earned a living as a boxer, circus performer, and self-defense trainer. During World War I he was interned with other German citizens in a camp in Lancaster, England, where he trained other inmates in fitness and exercises. It was here that the true Pilates Method was first developed.

Following WW I, Joseph Pilates emigrated to the United States. It was on the ship to America that he met his future wife, Clara. The couple founded a studio in New York City and taught and supervised their students until Joseph died in 1967 at 87 years of age.

The Pilates method encourages the use of the mind to control the muscles. This method focuses on the core postural muscles that help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine. Pilates exercises teach awareness of breathing and alignment of the spine, and strengthening of the deep torso muscles, all of which are important to help alleviate and prevent back pain.

STOTT PILATES®

The STOTT PILATES Method is a contemporary, anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates' original exercise method, developed by a professional dancer, Moira Merrithew. Its exercises safely deliver optimal strength, flexibility and endurance, without adding bulk. This stress-relieving Method can be performed on a mat or using dedicated STOTT PILATES equipment.

Unlike the original series of exercises, the STOTT PILATES Method incorporates modern exercise principles, including contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and performance enhancement. For example, the original approach promotes a flat back, while the exercises included in the STOTT PILATES Method are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints. They also place more emphasis on scapular stabilization. Additionally, there are more preparatory exercises and modifications to make the Method safer and more effective.

The STOTT PILATES Method improves core strength and balances the muscles around the joints, improving the way your body functions, looks and feels. It focuses specifically on breathing, pelvic and rib cage placement, scapular movement, and head and cervical spine placement.
